Anne Garden

The Anna Garden is an on-campus garden for students and faculty, located in the Anna parking lot. The six plant boxes, two of which RASA funded as a present for the Class of 2020. The plant boxes allow the UCR community to freely garden and enjoy the fruits of their labor. The plant boxes have been used to grow both native wildflowers and seasonal vegetables. It not only exemplifies how easy it can be to start a small garden, with limited space and tools but also increases local biodiversity. The promotion of biodiversity is not only achieved through plant-life, but also by providing food and shelter to insects, birds, and bees. To do so, the Anna Garden has an insect hotel, a bird bath and bird feeder as well as bird houses. To reduce the usage of drinking water, especially in times of drought, the Eleanor Green Office has installed a rainwater catching system. This way, rainwater from a barrel can be used for watering the plants. The barrel is an upcycled 500 l wooden wine barrel that is connected to the rainwater pipe. In case you are wondering how we moved this 100-kilo barrel from Koestraat to the Anna parking, check out our community diary entry on the UCR website: https://www.ucr.nl/community/ucr-sustainability-week/

We hope that the Anna Garden will grow in the future, creating a green space in the middle of our campus. It aims to inspire and encourage the community to grow your own food, reconnect with nature and increase local biodiversity.

If you are interested in growing some flowers or your own vegetables, feel free to contact us on Facebook or via email.
